The brief was to design a 1,700 m2 creative retreat on a cliffside in Lanzarote, Canary Islands. Inspiration was drawn from the island’s Mars-like blackened landscape that plunges into turquoise crystalline waters, creating a harmonious juxtaposition between the rugged shapes of the volcanic earth and the deep blue hues of the surrounding ocean.
CHALLENGE
The hotel rooms were to be divided into 3 different categories: plastic arts, meditation/literature and music – with each room requiring the necessary equipment to execute each medium efficiently, while maintaining the serene ambience necessary for an artist’s creative retreat.
SOLUTION
The facade is adorned with slate cladding, creating the illusion as if it were emerging from the surrounding landscape – creating a sense of privacy while making a strong architectural statement. A primarily neutral colour palette creates an environment of serenity and focus, and provides a striking contrast with raw materials such as untreated wood, natural stone, and corten steel. Large corten steel window seats frame the surrounding desert landscape creating the perfect resting place in between creative sessions.
