SERENITY

A young creative calls a small studio apartment home in Lausanne.

PROJECT serenity

Location lausanne, switzlerand

Keywords residential design

SUBJECT

The bedroom area is gently framed off from the rest of the space by a clothing rack and guitar stand, a small dining table easily turns to a desk when necessary, and a sofa that’s just the perfect size to double as a guest bed make 3 individual, bold statements. Drawers below the bed frame a chest of drawers add storage that’s hidden in plain site, and folding chairs hung on the wall serve as wall decor or extra seating for gatherings with friends. Furniture was hand selected to combine the client’s interest in industrial loft spaces while adding a touch of warmth inspired by the mountain views as seen from the apartment, with soft natural hues evoking a feeling of calm and serenity.

CHALLENGE

Faced with the common challenge of how to create individual, specific-use spaces within a small single room layout, the client sought a stylish solution that created a living, dining, and sleeping areas without feeling too busy and overcrowded.

SOLUTION

The space was divided into public and private use, connected via a hallway that runs alongside a staircase that leads to the lower floor. To remove focus from the low and dated drop ceiling, the office was adorned with countless plants, including hanging plantars that are suspended above the work stations to breathe life into an otherwise compact spacial volume. An acoustic linoleum floor with an imitation concrete texture combined with raw metal finishes, leather detailing, and industrial light fixtures adds a touch of masculinity, while cheeky neon signs and cobalt blue walls add a sense of humour and play.
